Eastbourne Pier Breaks Free Overnight And Begins Drifting Towards Sovereign Harbour

EASTBOURNE — Residents have woken to scenes of absolute confusion after Eastbourne Pier reportedly detached itself from the seafront overnight and began slowly making its way towards Sovereign Harbour.

The Victorian landmark was first noticed behaving unusually shortly after 6am when a dog walker reported that it appeared to be "several feet further to the left than yesterday."

By 7.30am, there was no longer any doubt.

"It's definitely moving," said local resident Graham Morris, who had been watching the structure for nearly an hour.

"Not quickly."

"But it's absolutely having a go."

Destination Unknown

Experts currently believe the Pier is travelling east at approximately 0.4 miles per hour.

If it maintains its present course, officials estimate it could reach Sovereign Harbour sometime next Thursday.

Nobody knows why it has decided to leave.

One theory suggests years of looking towards the harbour finally convinced the Pier to investigate what was going on down there.

Another claims it simply became overwhelmed by Airbourne traffic and decided it had "had enough."

Local maritime experts have dismissed both explanations on the grounds that piers are buildings.

This has done little to reassure residents.

Town Wakes To Missing Landmark

Confusion spread rapidly along the promenade as people arrived expecting the Pier to be where it normally is.

Tourist Patricia Reynolds initially assumed she had gone to the wrong part of the seafront.

"I checked Google Maps three times," she said.

"The little pin was exactly where I was standing."

"The Pier wasn't."

Several visitors were subsequently observed photographing the empty space.

One described it as "quite disappointing."

Local residents were more emotional.

"It's been there my entire life," said 71-year-old Margaret Collins.

"You can't just wander off."

"People rely on these things."

Rescue Operation Considered

Officials are reportedly examining several options for returning the Pier to its original position.

An early proposal involving tugboats has been described as "technically possible but extremely embarrassing."

Another suggestion would simply wait for the tide to change and hope for the best.

Eastbourne residents have already volunteered to help.

One man arrived carrying approximately 60 metres of rope.

"I've pulled a caravan before," he explained.

When told Eastbourne Pier weighs considerably more than a caravan, he replied:

"We'll need another rope then."

Sovereign Harbour Preparing

Meanwhile, residents around Sovereign Harbour have been monitoring the Pier's progress with increasing concern.

One resident reportedly asked whether it had planning permission.

Another wanted to know where exactly it intended to park.

Harbour officials have reassured residents that there is currently no indication the Pier intends to remain permanently.

Nevertheless, an emergency berth has reportedly been identified.

"It'll be tight," said one source.

"But if everyone moves their boats up a bit, we might squeeze it in."

Businesses Remain Open

Despite the ongoing movement, businesses operating on the Pier have reportedly continued trading.

Customers are advised that views may differ slightly from those advertised.

One visitor who entered near the town centre reportedly finished his cup of tea several hundred metres further east.

He described the experience as "excellent value."

Progress Continues

By lunchtime, hundreds of people had gathered along the seafront to watch the Pier's journey.

Progress remained extremely slow.

Some spectators left for lunch, returned an hour later and questioned whether it had moved at all.

Experts confirmed it had travelled approximately eleven metres.

At the time of publication, Eastbourne Pier was continuing steadily towards Sovereign Harbour.

Officials remain confident it can be recovered.

The Pier itself has made no statement regarding its intentions.

However, witnesses say it appears determined.

Sovereign Harbour has been advised to make room.
