Eastbourne Woman Puts Washing Out After Seeing Blue Sky, Immediately Causes Torrential Rain

EASTBOURNE — An Eastbourne woman has apologised after putting her washing outside during a brief period of sunshine and apparently triggering torrential rain across the town.

The incident began shortly after 11am when the 63-year-old resident looked through her kitchen window and noticed approximately four consecutive minutes of blue sky.

She immediately decided conditions were suitable for drying laundry.

"I should've known better," she admitted.

"But it looked lovely."

Approximately eleven minutes after the final item was secured to the washing line, clouds reportedly appeared from nowhere.

Rain followed shortly afterwards.

Entire Town Affected

Residents from several parts of Eastbourne reported experiencing the sudden downpour.

One man had just started mowing his lawn.

Another had opened all his windows.

A family had begun preparing a barbecue.

All three incidents are believed to have contributed to the severity of the weather.

However, meteorological responsibility has largely been placed on the washing.

"She put a full load out," said neighbour Graham Collins.

"Not just a couple of towels."

"That's asking for trouble."

Witnesses say the woman initially attempted to ignore the rain in the hope it would pass.

After approximately thirty seconds, she ran into the garden.

Emergency Retrieval Operation

What followed has been described as one of the fastest washing-line evacuations seen in Eastbourne this summer.

Bedsheets were removed first.

Towels followed.

Several smaller items were abandoned temporarily after falling onto the grass.

Her husband was called outside to assist but arrived without shoes and immediately returned indoors.

By the time the washing had been recovered, the rain stopped.

The sun then came back out.

The woman stood at the back door for several moments contemplating whether to try again.

Her husband advised against it.

Residents Furious

News of the incident quickly spread through the neighbourhood.

"I'd just sat outside with a cup of tea," said one resident.

"Then suddenly this."

"I knew somebody had put washing out."

Another neighbour said she had been planning to walk into town but postponed the journey after seeing the rain.

Five minutes later, conditions were dry again.

"Typical Eastbourne," she said.

Further Weather Incident Feared

At approximately 1pm, the woman was seen carrying the washing basket towards the garden for a second time.

Neighbours immediately intervened.

"Don't you dare," one reportedly shouted over the fence.

She eventually agreed to use an indoor drying rack.

Weather conditions have remained stable ever since.

Experts have reminded Eastbourne residents that sunshine does not necessarily mean it is safe to put washing outside.

Particularly if somebody nearby has just washed their car.

At the time of publication, blue skies had returned across the town.

Three separate residents were considering barbecues.

The situation remains extremely fragile.
