EAST SUSSEX — An entire Sussex village was placed on unofficial high alert after an unknown car parked outside somebody else's house for approximately eleven minutes.
The silver hatchback was first spotted shortly after 2pm when resident Margaret Collins noticed it through her front window.
She immediately became suspicious.
"Never seen it before."
Her husband suggested it might simply belong to somebody visiting.
Margaret rejected this theory as dangerously relaxed.
Neighbourhood Alerted
Within minutes, details of the vehicle had been posted in the village WhatsApp group.
Margaret: "Anyone know whose silver car this is?"
Susan: "Where?"
Margaret: "Outside number 14."
Brian: "Not mine."
Susan: "Looks suspicious."
Nobody had established what was suspicious about it.
This did not slow the investigation.
Curtain Surveillance Begins
Several residents began discreetly monitoring the vehicle.
Unfortunately, everybody attempted to do this from behind their curtains at the same time.
The street was soon lined with gently moving blinds.
One resident walked past the car pretending to put something in a bin.
Another took their dog out despite having returned from a walk twelve minutes earlier.
The dog was confused but cooperative.
Driver Eventually Appears
After eleven tense minutes, a man emerged from a nearby house.
Witnesses watched carefully.
He unlocked the mysterious vehicle.
Got inside.
And drove away.
Margaret immediately updated the group.
"He's gone now."
This received seven thumbs-up reactions.
Mystery Solved
Further investigation revealed the driver had been visiting his aunt.
She lived approximately three houses away.
He had parked legally.
Nothing whatsoever had happened.
Residents were relieved.
"I knew there'd be an innocent explanation," Margaret said.
She had previously suggested contacting the police.
Village Remains Vigilant
Despite the resolution, residents say the incident demonstrates the importance of community awareness.
"If something doesn't look right, people notice around here."
Asked what specifically hadn't looked right, Margaret thought carefully.
"He wasn't from here."
The man lives nine miles away.
Second Vehicle Spotted
Normality returned shortly afterwards.
The WhatsApp group went quiet.
Curtains reopened.
The dog finally went back to sleep.
Then, at approximately 3.40pm, Brian posted:
"Blue van just gone past slowly. Anyone expecting anything?"
Margaret was immediately back at the window.
Sussex remains on alert.
